Fortune Compass Receives Endorsement from Professor Wang Qingyu of the Sichuan Academy of Cultural History in Chengdu, China

We were privileged to travel to China recently in the company of Dr. Heiner Fruehauf where he introduced us to three incredible people steeped in classical Chinese medicine and tradition. Dr. Heiner Fruehauf is himself an expert practitioner and long time student of Master Wang Qingyu. His articles and website are referred to below.

Our first unforgettable and tender meeting was with Prof. Wang Qingyu of the Sichuan Academy of Cultural History. Prof. Wang offered his kind and enthusiastic endorsement of the Fortune Compass, and is truly delighted to be working with American entrepreneurs that want to make classical Chinese traditions accessible to all.

Prof. Wang stated that Steve Vollum’s invention of the Fortune Compass is a perfect marriage with classical Chinese Feng Shui technology. It allows access by anyone interested in 4000-year-old technology that can be used to help change anyone’s life. He also stated that Steve's invention assists significantly in restoring Feng Shui to the fields of science and mathematics and refutes the feudalist and superstitious connotations that sometimes surround this ancient Chinese technology.

We also met with Abbot Fu Yuanfa of the Yuntai Guan monastery in Sichuan and Professor Liu Lihong of the Guangxi Institute for the Clinical Research of Classical Chinese Medicine. Abbot Fu described the Fortune Compass project as an endeavor that unites cultures, led by people with high integrity. Dr. Liu is helping us expand the information that will become available on the compass beyond the Flying Stars, Ming Gua, and Ba Zhai to include the Four Pillars of Destiny. You can meet them and view some very special video interviews with them at  this site

What do the "Elements" Displayed On Your Fortune Compass Mean?

We have had a lot of requests to explain the "Element" feature displayed on the Fortune Compass. Your Element is calculated along with your Gua number and is significant because it helps you decide how to rate the importance of which direction you might want to focus on first. Your personal element is related to your body and includes your internal organs. The information below can help you discover the physical health areas that you may want to work on to really get tuned up.

In a scholarly and succinct response to a Letter To The Editor, Dr. Heiner Fruehof writes clearly about the use of the Five Elements in Feng Shui. In this response, Dr. Fruehof gives evidence that this particular function of Feng Shui is a critical part of the whole of the technology. You can find the article here.

There are times when you want a Classical Chinese Medicine practitioner to help you discover the answers to questions you might have about your personal element, your body and how to really tune it up. You can find that kind of expertise through the site above.

I have done some investigation and study of the Elements as they are defined in Traditional Chinese medicine. However well schooled one is in this arena, it is still not easy to rattle off a simple explanation of the Five Elements that encourages a person to believe that they can make use of the information. I was utterly delighted when I found a book written in English that I could read and wrap my elemental understanding around. It is probably one of the most simple and concise English explanations of the Five Elements that I have found and was written by Michelle R. Kluck in her book HANDS ON FEET The New System that Makes Reflexology a Snap! ISBN 0-7624-0961-4. Note: This book is worthy of purchasing for your personal library as well as a gift for friends or family.

To quote Ms. Kluck: "In Chinese medicine, it is believed that our bodies are composed of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each element corresponds to particular organs, emotions, seasons, colors and other characteristics. Just as every organ is associated with a specific chakra, every organ is also associated with one of the five elements. Every organ also corresponds to a specific energy, either yin (negative) energy or yang (positive) energy. (Editor's note: one can also understand this as Yin = slow, passive or not very active energy and Yang = very active energy.) The Chinese believe that for good health and longevity, you must be aligned with nature and live harmoniously with all five elements and all living beings. If there is an imbalance of energy and you are not in tune with one of the five elements, disease can manifest in the associated part of the body. By attuning yourself to the five elemental energies, you can learn to balance your energy, heal your body and prevent disease."
In order to attune your body, you must first know which element is most dominant in your constitution, ergo, the "Element" that is displayed on your Fortune Compass.

There are numerous books on Feng Shui that go deeply into the subject of the Five Elements and how they affect you as well as giving complete instructions on how to implement element changes in your personal environment. They are worth reading when you are ready for that level of involvement or you can contact any one of the Affiliates listed on our website for consultation in the areas of interest to you.

One can also find a fair analysis of the particulars of the Five Elements described in Wikipedia here. You may have to expend a few grey cells to figure out what is being discussed but it will help you to know that there is a generating cycle of the Five Elements as well as an overcoming or diminishing cycle.

For example: if you have a "water" element in your makeup, and you live at the beach overlooking the ocean and swim everyday, you may develop an overabundance of water in your personal environment that could lead to an imbalance in your physical system. You don't need to move your residence necessarily but you may need to include other elements to help balance your personal surroundings as well as add in colors and objects that represent a more balanced elemental environment for you.
